The Office of Student Affairs held its first-ever “Zero […]

The Office of Student Affairs held its first-ever “Zero Campus Traffic Accidents” Creative Proposal Competition, inviting student teams to develop feasible traffic-safety improvement plans and analyze related policy issues for both on-campus and surrounding roadways. A total of 18 proposals advanced to the final presentation round, which took place today (12/13) at 9:00 AM in the Humanities Lecture Hall on the 2nd floor of the General Building. President Chin-Long Chang, Pingtung County Police Traffic Division Deputy Commander Ta-Wei Cheng, Formosa Horticulture Group CEO Fu-Chuan Peng, Executive Vice President Wen-Ling Shih, Department of Business Administration Associate Professor Chia-Yi Chen, Director of the Military Education Office and Chief of the Student Life Guidance Section Chuan-Chun Fu, and former Military Education Office Director and former Chief of the Student Life Guidance Section Wen-Ching Kuo were present for the event.

President Chin-Long Chang noted:
“NPUST is one of the few universities that allows students to ride motorcycles on campus and even has traffic lights installed within school grounds. Traffic safety is therefore a matter of great importance to us. Every year, many freshmen are unfamiliar with campus roads, so the university enhances safety awareness through various orientations and educational activities. We are grateful to our faculty, students, alumni, and the Pingtung County Police Traffic Division for supporting this event. Through traffic safety education, we hope students will strengthen their awareness of safe driving.”

Pingtung County Police Traffic Division Deputy Commander Ta-Wei Cheng added:
“The Traffic Division has long collaborated with NPUST to promote traffic safety to students. Speeding is a major cause of accidents in any region. Following traffic regulations is the key to reducing incidents.”

The NPUST campus covers nearly 300 hectares, with more than 20 hectares designated as roadways. Due to the significant distances between teaching buildings, research facilities, practice sites, and administrative offices, cars and motorcycles have become the primary modes of transportation for faculty and students. The purpose of the “Zero Campus Traffic Accidents” Creative Proposal Competition is to strengthen traffic safety awareness and embed responsible driving habits. Student teams examined on-campus traffic conditions from a student-centered perspective, exploring issues related to hazard perception, incident response, technological applications, and environmental improvements. The competition generated enthusiastic participation and resulted in a wide range of meaningful proposals.

Following the deadline, multiple student teams submitted proposals. After a preliminary document review and online student voting, finalists were selected to deliver oral presentations during the final round. Proposals were evaluated based on five criteria: content completeness, innovation and foresight, potential impact, feasibility for future action, and quality of presentation. Winning teams will be awarded on December 26 (Thursday) during the Traffic Safety Committee meeting.

This competition aims not only to enhance awareness of campus traffic safety and adherence to traffic rules but also to cultivate students’ abilities to identify issues, conduct field investigations, and generate creative solutions. It further seeks to strengthen students’ innovation capacity while reflecting the university’s commitment to integrating education into everyday life and caring for students’ well-being.

Each year prior to freshmen enrollment, NPUST invites the Traffic Division to provide instruction on traffic regulations, accident analysis, signal and signage interpretation, accident-handling procedures, and pedestrian safety. The Office of Student Affairs also regularly communicates campus and surrounding road conditions, high-risk time periods for accidents, common violation patterns, motorcycle driving guidance, and live driving demonstrations. Traffic-safety promotion is further reinforced through class meetings and various campus activities. In addition, expert meetings are held to continually improve the campus environment, with the goal of achieving a safe campus through multiple coordinated efforts.

The NPUST Indigenous Students Resource Center put on it […]

The NPUST Indigenous Students Resource Center put on its “Summer Life Camp” at Wutai Elementary School (Ligu-Lily Campus) and Timur Elementary School in Pingtung County this year (2024) from July 8th to 19th. A service team of 10 university students held the activities and taught the primary school students about concepts related to natural ecological conservation. The theme of this year’s program gave focus to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and covered such things as carbon reduction, environmental protection, water resources utilization, and recycling. Games were used to make the learning experiences interesting and enjoyable for the young pupils.

The “SDG” theme of the camp was quite new to the service students, so a pre-camp training course was used to familiarize the team with the features of the sustainable development goals and the course design. The three-day training course was held at the end of June.

A total of 55 primary school students from two primary schools participated in this year’s activities. Given the task of serving as “environmental action reporters”, the young students visited tribes nearby their schools and gather information about how residents utilize water resources. Then the students learned how to make filters for domestic water using readily available materials. The activities allowed the children to be creative and make good use of resources while learning to care for the earth in a concrete way. During the camp, the children were also instructed on how to reduce the use of disposable items and save energy. Carbon reduction logs were recorded each day to maintain tabs on their progress as they worked to achieve the service goals. On July 12th, four members of the Ministry of Education even visited the camps to witness the action, and in early August, they issued a letter speaking highly of the results, expressing hopes to see the camp’s activities expand to more areas in the future.

On June 22 (2024), NPUST held a special graduation cere […]

On June 22 (2024), NPUST held a special graduation ceremony for its indigenous students to celebrate their culture and provide them with warm memories as they move into the next stages of their lives. During the ceremony, millet was used for the “tassel turning” ceremony to represent their academic harvest and achievements, and each graduate also received millet wine to symbolized blessings for the future. Wearing colorful handmade sashes, the graduating students stood tall as they welcomed the new challenges and opportunities that are awaiting them in the future.

The graduation ceremony was jointly organized by the NPUST Indigenous Student Resource Center and Indigenous students from the school. As early as March of this year, Indigenous students were invited to help prepare for the event by brewing millet wine and collecting different types of millet from the tribes’ crops to create millet bundles to present to the graduates. In the culture of the Rukai and Paiwan peoples, millet is a very representative crop, symbolizing rich harvests and blessings. The venue where the ceremony was held was also decorated with cultural elements of the local tribes, and the participating graduates and current students all wore their traditional costumes.

Since its establishment in 2016, the NPUST Indigenous Student Resource Center has been providing support to indigenous students on campus, not only giving concern to the students’ academic studies, but also to their campus lives in general. At the graduation ceremony, the graduates shared some of the valuable experiences they had during their time at NPUST, hoping to encourage younger students to be proactive and have fun, so that their campus lives and the university as a whole can be more colorful.

With nearly 10,000 students enrolled at NPUST in the 20 […]

With nearly 10,000 students enrolled at NPUST in the 2023–2024 academic year and nearly 2,000 new students arriving this semester, the Office of Student Affairs’ Student Life Guidance Section held the “Off-Campus Housing Landlords and Tenants Forum” today (5/23) at 10:00 AM. Nearly 50 distinguished off-campus housing landlords and students participated, including several landlords providing accommodations for more than 100 tenants. The event served not only to recognize outstanding landlords but also to strengthen connections between the university and the community, jointly enhancing the support network for off-campus housing and ensuring students have safe and comfortable living environments.

Deputy Dean of Student Affairs Ya-Ling Wu expressed appreciation to the attending landlords and students. She noted that approximately 5,000 NPUST students live in off-campus housing, and landlords play a role akin to “off-campus parents,” providing essential care for students. On behalf of the university, she presented certificates of appreciation to landlords who have demonstrated exceptional contributions in safety management, supporting disadvantaged students, and assisting with housing-related matters. She emphasized that the forum fosters improved communication and positive interactions between landlords and student tenants.

The forum featured a special lecture by Chief Kuo-Liang Chung from the Pingtung County Government Land Administration Section, covering key topics such as legal considerations for renting, the Rental Housing Act, common rental disputes, and property management programs. The Longquan Fire Brigade also provided fire safety education. During the discussion, landlords responded to students’ questions and reminded them to pay attention to deadlines for rental subsidy applications, while encouraging the university to further promote related information. This exchange helped raise awareness of safety responsibilities among landlords.

NPUST remains committed to creating a safer and more comfortable living environment for students. The university provides comprehensive information support, including the Ministry of Education–supported NPUST Off-Campus Housing Information Platform, which offers rental guidelines, housing checklists, FAQs on common rental disputes, and listings of rental properties with certified fire safety inspections—updated regularly by the university. Additionally, the campus green-energy shuttle bus routes include stops at off-campus housing areas, further enhancing convenience and safety. Through continued cooperation between the university, landlords, and the community, NPUST strives to build an improved and reliable support system for students living off campus.

Recognizing the necessity of gender equality education […]

Recognizing the necessity of gender equality education on campus and in response to the Ministry of Education’s “Gender Equality Education Day” on April 20, the Office of Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Personnel Office, the Department of Fashion Design, the Library, the Teacher Education Center, the Department of Food Science, and the Faculty and Student Consumer Cooperative, organized a series of “Diversity Respect & Gender Equality Day” activities on the evening of April 25 at the outdoor platform next to the Meng Xiang Gymnasium. The event aimed to encourage faculty and students to recognize and respect individuals with diverse gender characteristics and sexual orientations, fostering a safe and welcoming learning environment for all.

The “Diversity Respect & Gender Equality Day” series of activities was officially inaugurated by President Chang Chin-Lung. In his opening remarks, President Chang stated, “NPUST has long been committed to promoting gender equality education and gender mainstreaming, striving to create a gender-friendly campus. This year, in alignment with the Ministry of Education’s ‘Gender Equality Education Day,’ our university has adopted ‘Diversity Respect’ as the central theme. Through a series of lively and diverse activities, we encourage everyone to explore, understand, and respect the various aspects of gender diversity.”

President Chang actively participated in the engaging and informative gender equality activities alongside faculty and students, interacting warmly with the students and offering words of encouragement. Male students from the Continuing Bachelor’s Program in Technological Agriculture remarked, “Hearing the voices of individuals with diverse sexual orientations on-site was shocking and deeply thought-provoking.”

Liao Pei-Ju, Director of the Student Counseling Center, commented, “This event is fantastic! It provides a natural way for students and faculty to revisit and learn about gender equality.” Students from various departments eagerly joined the activities, and international students showed great interest as well. Alumni who had graduated also returned to campus for the event, and local residents who came to exercise even stayed to watch the film screening. Although the event was scheduled to end at 8:30 PM, the enthusiastic participation of the students extended it until 9:30 PM.
