Adorable Study Companions – Assistance Dogs Supporting Reading

Three learning assistance dogs from our university’s working dog training center were invited to participate in the “Adorable Study Companions – Dog Reading Companions” event organized by the Wanluan Township Public Library in Pingtung County on March 12. Leveraging the attraction of dogs as study companions and listeners, they accompanied children in reading, allowing them to enjoy reading in a pleasant and relaxed environment. The goal was to instill a spontaneous love for reading and gain confidence, while promoting life education about caring for animals through these activities.

The three learning assistance dogs participating in the event are “Spiritual Therapy Dog Oyster,” “Miguru Dog Big Ears,” and “Miniature Schnauzer Bayo.” These dogs were carefully selected and trained for their gentle and friendly personalities, non-aggressive nature, and stability, enabling them to patiently accompany children. On the day of the event, more than 30 children and parents participated in the library’s parent-child reading area. Guided by our university’s dog-handling students, the learning assistance dogs sat quietly, lay down, or curled up, demonstrating poses that did not disturb the children as they read. Their silent presence allowed the children to focus on reading picture books. Occasionally, the children would gently touch the dogs or glance at them to confirm if they were attentively listening.

The “Adorable Study Companions – Dog Reading Companions” event not only allowed children to read books to dogs but also increased opportunities to cultivate a love for reading and enhance motivation to learn. In the future, it is hoped that similar activities can be organized to harness the healing power of cute dogs, providing more opportunities for children to read together. The organizers also hope that children can gain greater confidence and a sense of achievement from this reading experience.
