As part of NPUST’s cooperation with the Taiwan government to promote its New Southbound Policy, in 2019 it hosted the first “New Southbound Policy Countries Futsal Tournament”. After a couple year’s hiatus, this year, the promotional sporting event has returned as the “Humanities Cup – New Southbound Invitational Badminton Tournament”. The event took place on October 1st, 2022 at the NPUST Mengxiang Gymnasium with the ultimate aim of enhancing exchange and friendship between students from the participating counties.

NPUST President Chin-Lung Chang said: “with the slowdown of the epidemic, we are very happy to hold the New Southbound Invitational Badminton Tournament this year. This exciting competition between foreign students and local students and staff is an opportunity for participants to make new friends and develop good international relationships.”

A total of 24 groups of athletes signed up for the competition. In addition to local students and staff members, students from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Brunei and Hong Kong participated in the exciting competition. The highlight of the event was that it adopted a new and more interesting set of competition rules, with “2 men and 1 women” as a group of three fighting for a ” 30 point” victory. The goal was to encourage positive interaction between the players and create some unforgettable experiences for everyone.

The tournament was supported by the Ministry of Education Sports Administration. For NPUST, which is located in Taiwan’s southernmost county, hopes are to see more friends from the New Southbound Policy countries come to visit Taiwan and take part in exchange— and experience the different and unique culture and customs it has to offer.
