In celebration of NPUST’s 100th anniversary, the Department of Fashion Design and Management organized a charity event at the Canaan Care Home on June 4th (2024). Department Director Wei-Her Hsieh led the group of volunteers which included teacher Yueh-Shen Cheng, designer Chin-Yi Yang and six students from the Department of Fashion (Yi-Chieh Yang, Yi-Ting Hsieh, Chia-Chen Chung, Yu-Ching Wang, Tzu-Ting Liao and Yu-Ting Su). Director Wei-Her Hsieh and teacher Yueh-Shen Cheng, both of whom have a wealth of professional knowledge and skills in styling and hairdressing, aimed to provide the students with a deeper understanding of the purpose of social services, and allow them to learn the importance of caring for the elderly, cultivating empathy, and showing kindness through social welfare.

Department Director Wei-Her Hsieh, who holds a doctorate in art and design from the University of Leeds School of Design and a professional hairstyling certificate from the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, said: “this free haircut event is not only about providing hairdressing services for the elderly, but also about providing warm communication and companionship. As the teachers and students of the Department of Fashion enjoy cordial interaction with the elderly, we can listen to their stories and share the joys of life with each other. At the same time students are able to learn to care for society and cultivate an understanding of the value of using services to help others.”
