With the hot summer reaching its mid-point, the most important pig veterinary event in Asia kicked off in Taipei. The Asian Pig Veterinary Society Congress (APVS 2023) was held in Taiwan for the first time this year, making for an unprecedented event in the global swine veterinary community. National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) Department of Veterinary Medicine Professor Ming-Tang Chiou served as the conference chairman, together with his colleague, Professor Chao-Nan Lin, who served as secretary-general—both being experts in pig diseases. Through the prestigious academic event, scholars and experts from all over the world came together to discuss forward-looking technologies and the latest research in the field. Together, they aimed to inject new impetus into the battle for pig health in Asia and around the world. The conference was held at the Taipei International Convention Center from July 30 to August 2, 2023.

NPUST Professor Chao-Nan Lin pointed out that a total of 283 exciting academic papers were published at the conference, with 36 oral reports and 247 poster presentations. The outstanding scholars shared scientific research results and experiences through their papers, with hopes of improving the health of pigs and providing people with safer food. There were also more than 30 booths at the conference, where exhibitors shared company information and new knowledge with the visitors. The NPUST Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Alumni Association also sponsored a booth, at which the university’s Office of International Affairs and College of Veterinary Medicine shared school-related information, allowing distinguished guests from home and abroad to get acquainted with school.

Themes of discussion at APVS 2023 covered many important areas such as pig health management, biosecurity, nutrition, and animal welfare. Nineteen top experts in pig-related fields from all over the world were invited to give keynote speeches and a special workshop for farmers in Taiwan was put together by renowned NPUST professor Liang Chou Hsia and scholars from England and the United States. Together with the oral and poster presentations, the conference provided a wealth of information on current challenges and opportunities in the field of pig health, and an in-depth look at best practices and innovative solutions.

In addition to academic seminars, a variety of social activities and cultural experiences were held during the conference, so that participants could enjoy an encounter with the unique charm of Taiwan. The APVS 2023 conference brought in participants from 38 countries, with 1,350 VIPs registered on the roster.
